a time and a place - coal protestors at Newcastle University

Apparently there is a protest underway in the lobby of The Chancellery at the University of Newcastle. They are protesting “Clean Coal”.

Now i may be missing something but i can think of a fair number of better places to hold this protest. Maybe on the foreshore as a coal ship is coming in. Maybe near the gates of the coal processing facility in Newcastle.

Anyway, more power to them. Democracy in action and all that. If anyone actually knows more about what they’re protesting please post as i’m curious.

  • I believe that if they wanted to protest ‘Coal’ then they would, and have, picked coal processing/distribution infrastructure. I think the reasoning is that as ‘Clean Coal’ is still in a mostly academic phase then they protest at the university. I am extrapolating from this that the uni is conducting some research into a ‘clean coal solution’ and the protesters want the time, effort and money put into a more solid science. By solid I should also mean a solution that wont bury the problem for another day or is ‘business as usual’ under another guise.

  • From what I heard they didn’t even notify the media that they were holding a protest, so nobody knew about it. This is what happens when we don’t give the students enough homework - they get bored and protest stuff (or have barbecues - which frankly would have been a much better way to make me care about coal).
