For those not in this country or not into sport i’d like to draw your attention to the fact that the Newcastle Jets won the A-League (that’s soccer for those that don’t know, i’m looking at you Tony) Grand Final.
It was a tense game not without controversy but Newcastle prevailed.
Truly fantastic.

Kind of hard to miss Reg.
Brought the paper yesterday and found that with the exception of the letters to the editor, the one page of world news, racing and the classifieds, the whole paper was about the Jets winning.
While I’m not into sport I can understand that a local team winning a national competition is big news, surely something else must of happened. I can’t believe that the entire hunter region came to a complete standstill over a soccer game.

It is pretty big news. I have to admit that i’ve caught the soccer bug.

Again I do not dispute that it is big news. I’ll even waver my usual complaints about sport related issues appearing on the front page.
But the WHOLE paper?! Where there no murders? No theft? No car crashes? No political news?
But I will give it this. At least it was news. Unlike the dribble that they pass off for news these days - celebrities being knocked up, celebrities getting drunk or wasted (big surprise), what some punk kid who had a big party, trashed the neighbourhood and is now living off the media attention, is currently doing.

What is this “sport”, and why would I care?

You wouldn’t, but someone has to. There must always be balance.
