doctor who, season 4 - episode 1
So The Doctor is back.
After waiting for many months it actually snuck up on me so that i only really knew it was coming back a few days before it did. The fervor was high though and Sunday night saw me hunkering down with The Doctor.
I won’t go into a synopsis just in case you haven’t seen it yet (i’m looking at you James) but i will say that it was a bit of a let down. Then again it was always going to be. Something hyped up so much (especially in my head) is pretty much always going to be nowhere near as good as i thought it could be.
Catherine Tate just doesn’t do it for me. She is loud and abrasive. I’m sure that she’ll soften up as the series goes on but right now she’s just making me uncomfortable.
It was pretty obvious why she was chosen as the new companion. They needed to get away from the whole The Doctor’s companion is in love with him thing and i’m pretty thankful that they’ve done that. They did it with a fairly sizable hammer but they did it nonetheless.
As for the story (which, hey, is really what the show is about) i didn’t mind it. I thought that the Adipose were quite cute but because i’ve been trained not to trust television i was fully expecting them to go feral at some stage in the episode.
Also, i want to know who among the Doctor Who staff has a thing for fart jokes. It was ok for the Slitheen to have some bowel issues but come on, we’re all adults here and i think this episode could have done without all the flatulent birthing.
As i said, this reveiw will be spoiler free, but the best part of this episode was without doubt the last reveal. Those who’ve seen it know what i’m talking about and are probably just as excited as i am.
I’m looking forward to next week and am confident that it will be onward and upward from here on in.
Fingers crossed.

“It was pretty obvious why she was chosen as the new companion. They needed to get away from the whole The Doctor’s companion is in love with him thing” Did we watch the same episode?
She is so in love with him. After their adventure at X-mas, she has been traveling England to find him, putting herself in very dangerous situations in a hope to run into him, with her bags all packed and ready in the back of her car on the off chance she did run into him.
Despite her loud protestations to the contry, she is into him. I think it’ll be like season 1 when the doctor first tells Rose he was sick with traveling with stupid apes, only to start thinking Rose was special, only to find out she was still just a stupid ape (Father’s day) and cometo accept it.

I’m banking on the producers not doing the same thing three companions in a row. They need to get passed it and i think Catherine Tate was hired for that purpose.
I do agree that there were some instances where it looked like she was sweet on him but i’m hoping that she is simply in love with the life that he can give her (freedom from the day to day grind and all that).
If it ends up with her being in love with him then i will seriously consider not watching this anymore. If they can’t think of any new relationships then they need to get new writers.
