Voyage of the Damned - The Doctor Who Christmas Special

I love Doctor Who. The modern series is truly a fantastic Sci-Fi show and i long for it’s full time return.

The above sentence doesn’t bode too well for the rest of the review, does it?

Voyage of the Damned is good. It’s a solid Doctor Who story with all the elements that make the show great.

It’s a bit all over the place though. It quite clearly takes a lot of inspiration from The Poseidon Adventure but at times slips into a pseudo-romantic subplot that quickly gets tired. I’m quite over David Tennant’s Doctor getting all misty eyed over every pretty girl that comes his way. There is every possibility that this will be dealt with in the upcoming series given that all three companions are going to be getting some shared screen time (if the rumours are true anyway). There’s a strange class divide segment of the plot that never quite gels as well as an “old man whose wasted his life but is given a second chance” story that feels like it was there only to flesh out the running time.

The main thread of the plot is solid though and cleverly written. I felt sure i knew what was going on but was pleasantly surprised by the final revelation. All of the acting is good too. Initially i thought i was having issue with Kylie but i soon realised that i was merely having trouble seeing her as anything but Kylie. She actually showed her skills as an actor numerous times, often under difficult CG circumstances. The series also continues to call in the big British names for which i am very thankful. Hopefully this trend continues into season 4.

I’ll be honest and say that i got more excited over the preview for next season than almost anything in the episode itself (with the possible exception of the true nature of the Titanic) but that’s probably more my own issues than anything actually wrong with the episode. Overall it was a good episode and let’s be honest, who doesn’t want to see a bit of the Doctor at Christmas.
